The Apple Watch Effect: I Actually Refuse To Miss A Workout

Even though one of my resumes says “former personal trainer and fitness instructor,” it didn’t automatically mean I was always gung-ho about working out. In fact, I hit a point where motivation was as elusive as a good hair day in humidity, or I was too busy, or not in the right shape, or insert another creative excuse here.

And let’s talk about my Fitbit days. I was so committed to the Fitbit life that I swore I’d never, ever, in a million years, switch to an Apple Watch. They just seemed so… extra. I mean, I already had a phone. Why did I need a wrist gadget that made me feel like a low-budget version of Dick Tracy?

But then, in a twist of fate (or just bad laundry habits), my Fitbit either got lost or took a dive in the washing machine. After being without it, I realized the importance of having a fitness tracker, even if it was just to guilt-trip me into hitting 10,000 steps.

Enter the hand-me-down Apple Watch, courtesy of an old friend. Things were ticking along nicely with my step count until there were fireworks. Yes, like a literal firework vibration on my wrist. Apparently, whatever I did, I had closed all of my “rings.” Hmmm… what was this rings thing they spoke of?

Mastering Apple Watch’s Activity Goals

Apple Watches are known for their motivational elements like Activity Rings. Its goal is to provide a simple way for you to monitor your physical activities and encourage you to meet daily movement goals. The system consists of three rings, each representing a different aspect of physical activity:

The RED Move Ring: This ring represents the calories you’ve burned by being active throughout the day.

The GREEN Exercise Ring: The Exercise ring tracks how many minutes of brisk activity you’ve completed. Apple defines this as any activity equivalent to at least a brisk walk. All workouts logged in the Workout app, as well as other connected fitness apps like MyFitnessPal, contribute to this ring.

The BLUE Standing Ring: The WHO highlights sitting is a 4th leading cause of death. This ring motivates you to stand and move for at least a minute every hour, across 12 hours daily, aiming to mitigate health risks from prolonged sitting. This was a game-changer for me. Before using this watch, I hadn’t fully realized the importance of moving hourly, but now it’s become second nature. Of course, there are times when I need a little nudge, and that’s where the wrist vibration reminders to stand up and walk around prove invaluable.

A New Me With New Habits

I have my rings displayed on the watch face, a choice that’s optional but crucial for me. It’s so motivating that I often find myself springing into action at 11 PM, driven to close those rings before midnight strikes.

In a twist I never expected, much like my initial vow to never get an Apple Watch, I’ve transformed from someone who avoided evening workouts to someone who embraces them. This change was partly inspired by James Clear’s concept in ‘Atomic Habits’ about the power of consistency and not breaking the chain of habits. It’s also fueled by friendly Apple Watch competitions with my family, where, I’ll admit, my competitive spirit comes alive.

Accessorizing Your Tech

“Initially, I was all about closing my rings but not so keen on the fitness look of my band. Then I discovered the fantastic world of Apple Watch bands. I’ve found affordable options to match my outfits, from basic gold and black to navy, and even a 4-pack for workouts. My absolute favorite? A pearl band that always draws compliments, especially since I often wear pearls.

I’ve noticed some upscale brands like Kate Spade offer bands, and you can find budget-friendly ones at places like Shein. A pro tip: invest in a protective cover. I learned the hard way when I dropped my watch on a stone floor.

Step Counting and Workout Diversity

Another perk of the Apple Watch is never missing a step. A friend, initially an Apple Watch skeptic like me, used to fret about lost steps. Unlike a phone that might not always be in your pocket, the watch is always there, tracking every step.

I’m also a fan of the variety in workout types. Beyond the usual treadmill “indoor walk” setting, there are several specific options like yoga, skating, tennis, and high-intensity interval training. I often use the ‘other’ setting for my vibration machine sessions. Plus, it syncs beautifully with my Orangetheory workout class app, and I can personally log my Pure Barre workout classes using the “barre” setting. All of the data syncs seamlessly with the Apple Health app, providing a great overview of my cardio trends.

Sleep Tracking

The one downside? I can’t use the sleep tracking feature much since I charge it overnight. I wish the battery lasted longer to monitor my sleep – a crucial part of fitness and health. I’m considering getting a second unit just for sleep tracking.

Challenges and Friendly Competitions

And let’s not forget the fun challenges – from the Lunar New Year to Earth Day challenges, and the perfect month awards. There are also Workout Awards for hitting milestones in specific activities, like swimming a certain distance or completing yoga sessions. It’s these little things that keep the fitness journey exciting!

My sister and I started using our Apple Watches for friendly competition and motivation. Soon, we involved our father, who’s in poor health, as a playful way to keep an eye on his fitness. Feeling a bit left out, my mother switched from Android to Apple just to join in with her own Apple Watch. Now, we all compete together.

But if family competitions aren’t your thing, there’s an alternative. The ‘Challenges’ app is great for those seeking accountability. It’s designed for Apple Watch users to engage in ring challenges with people worldwide. This app is a fantastic motivator, especially if you want to contribute effectively to your group.

It Could Save Your Life In More Ways Than One

Heart Rate and Blood Oxygen Monitoring

Yes, maintaining consistency in your health routine is beneficial, but an Apple Watch could also be a lifesaver in other ways. Key features include advanced health monitoring, fall detection, and emergency SOS. Some models come with an FDA-approved ECG monitor capable of detecting signs of atrial fibrillation. The watch’s heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring can alert users to high or low heart rates and irregular rhythms. I personally know someone who, after receiving high heart rate alerts, visited a cardiologist, potentially saving their life. There are numerous stories of Apple Watches being life-saving devices.

Fall Detection and Emergency SOS

The phrase “help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” from commercials becomes a stark reality when it happens to you or someone close. Fall injuries, especially among the elderly, are a serious concern. For your grandparents, parents, or anyone, including yourself, the Fall Detection and Emergency SOS features are invaluable. The watch can detect a hard fall and automatically call emergency services if the wearer is unresponsive after a set time. This is particularly useful for the elderly or those with medical conditions.

My journey with the Apple Watch has been a revelation. From a skeptic to an advocate, I’ve experienced firsthand how this smart device can transform one’s approach to health and fitness. I hope this information helps you transform yours as well.
